This morning the malades boarded their cats and the caregivers of the Order and the volunteers led them to the chapel L’eglise Sainte-Bernadette. We crossed the river Gave by way of one of the several bridges to this most modern of the various churches here in the Sanctuary. This is a grace filled service as the malades receive their rosaries, made by the Poor Clares from seed pods indigenous to this area of the Pyrenees, and blessed today by Archbishop Cordileone. The many priests and several bishops, dispersed throughout the church to offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Following that the hands of the caregivers received a special blessing with Lourdes water to guide them in this ministry of service into which we are called and all share. The most moving part of this morning’s service was the washing of the malade’s feet by members of the Order. This is very emotional for both the malade and the one who is washing. We read and reflected on Christ’s washing of his Apostles feet at the last Super and his charge to them to do the same for one another. The faces, mostly the eyes, tell it all. Tears of joy, of submission, of humility, and smiles as well, as we remind ourselves of the special gifts to which we are present. The gift of service, of being served, of prayer, of strength through grace and of forgiveness from a merciful God.
