Today we took a road trip up into the foothills of the Pyrenees. The views the valleys and the majestic mountains were breathtaking. These same mountain ranges and valleys have witnessed many military confrontations that have determined history for over 1000 years. The Abbey, pictured above, was built in the 12th century by the Benedictines. It holds the oldest functioning pipe organ in France. We sat in the coolness of the old stone church and walked, prayed and sung the Stations of the Cross. For the malades, companions and the Order, it gave us a moment to connect the suffering in our lives and the service to those on their own difficult journeys to the steps our Lord took to reconcile us to God the Father. The Stations are wonderful spiritual reflection. They take on new meaning when you are in the presence of so many whose faith and strength are an inspiration to remind you what it is to trust God. Afterwards, in the quaint town, we walked, talked, and found the local store with its’ freezer of ice cream bars.
